Three Teenagers Arrested for Armed Robbery at Memorial Service in Florida

Lakeland, FL – Three teenagers have been arrested following a violent armed robbery that occurred during a memorial service for a deceased friend in Lakeland, Florida. The robbery took place at the Aldine-Combee County Park on the evening of November 2, 2024, where the victim was allegedly targeted at gunpoint by the suspects while paying his respects to a friend.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests on November 13, with the suspects ranging in age from 17 to 19. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was reportedly approached by four masked individuals while returning to his car after attending the memorial service. The suspects allegedly shoved the victim against his vehicle and threatened him with a gun.

The Robbery and Arrests

Authorities say Anthony Wilcox Jr., 18, who is known to the victim, was allegedly the one who pointed the gun at the victim, stealing a gold chain from around his neck. Jakari Lowery, 19, is accused of taking the victim’s cellphone, which was later recovered in the park. Meanwhile, Jadarrius Hayes, 17, who was taken into custody on November 7, allegedly admitted to being armed at the scene and pointing the gun during the robbery.

Warrants for the suspects’ arrests were issued after a witness identified them as the individuals involved in the incident. The Violent Gang Investigative Task Force and Robbery Unit were instrumental in tracking down the suspects, with Wilcox and Lowery being arrested on November 13.

The Lakeland Police Department informed the Polk County Sheriff’s Office that they had seen Wilcox and Lowery at a residence on South Combee Road. Upon arriving at the home, law enforcement officers observed Wilcox entering and exiting the residence carrying an AR-15 style rifle. Authorities surrounded the property and initiated contact, resulting in several individuals exiting quickly, but Wilcox and Lowery remained inside, eventually being persuaded to surrender.

During the search of the residence, police recovered two handguns and the AR-15 style rifle, which were all seized as evidence.

Suspects’ Criminal Histories

Despite their youth, the suspects have extensive criminal backgrounds:

  • Wilcox, who was charged with armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and ammo, and resisting arrest, has a criminal history that includes charges for possession of a firearm by a juvenile, carrying a concealed weapon, and theft. He was arrested in September 2024 in connection with a drive-by shooting.
  • Lowery, who had three active warrants at the time of his arrest and has a history of battery, was charged with resisting arrest and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
  • Hayes, the 17-year-old suspect, was charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and minor in possession of a firearm. His previous criminal record includes armed burglary of a vehicle.

Additionally, Brent Johnson, 21, a known gang member and convicted felon, was arrested at the same residence on charges of resisting arrest, possession of a firearm, and possession of marijuana. He has a criminal history that includes charges for firearm theft, carrying a concealed firearm with a gang enhancement, tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest.

Sheriff’s Statement

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd condemned the teenagers’ actions, stating that despite their young ages, they were involved in a dangerous and violent crime. He expressed frustration at their self-destructive behavior but emphasized that justice would be pursued.

“These suspects may be young, but they have quite the lengthy criminal histories,” said Sheriff Judd. “They committed a violent and dangerous armed robbery, and we will seek justice and hold them accountable. It’s a shame that they have gone down such a self-destructive road that will lead them to jail and prison.”

Conclusion

All three primary suspects, along with Brent Johnson, are facing serious charges, and investigators continue to work on building their cases. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has made it clear that they will continue to pursue justice in this case and hold the individuals responsible for their actions.

The arrests highlight the ongoing issues with youth violence and criminal activity in Florida, but they also serve as a reminder that law enforcement is dedicated to addressing such crimes and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.
