Three Men Charged in Homicide of Owen Sound Restaurant Owner Sharif Rahman

Owen Sound, Ont. – New details have emerged in the homicide investigation of Sharif Rahman, the 44-year-old restaurant owner fatally assaulted in August 2023. At a press conference held Wednesday, Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) revealed that three men from the United Kingdom have been charged in connection with Rahman’s death.

According to police, the assault occurred on August 17, 2023, after a dispute over a bill at Rahman’s restaurant. Three men allegedly attacked him outside the establishment, leading to severe injuries. Rahman was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police said that after the assault, the suspects fled the country, prompting a collaboration between OSPS, OPP, and international law enforcement partners to coordinate their arrests abroad. The suspects have been identified as Robert Evans, 24, charged with manslaughter, and Robert Busby Evans, 47, and Barry Evans, 54, both charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence.

The three men are currently before the courts regarding extradition, though police have not provided a timeline for their return to Canada.

Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose expressed relief at the developments in the case: “We are pleased to provide some long-awaited insight into the investigation and the court process in order for our community to continue to heal.” OPP Deputy Commissioner Marty Kearns also praised the efforts of law enforcement, noting, “This case underscores the critical importance of strong relationships among local and international law enforcement agencies.”

The investigation, which was complex and involved multiple police services, remains ongoing as authorities continue to work through the legal processes related to the extradition of the suspects.
