Three Arrested in Botched Robbery That Killed New Zealand Tourist

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Patricia McKay, a 68-year-old tourist from New Zealand, was struck and killed during a robbery attempt at Newport Beach’s Fashion Island on Tuesday. Authorities identified McKay, who was visiting the popular shopping destination with her husband, Doug McKay, a prominent businessman from Auckland.

The suspects — Jaden Cunningham, 18, Malachi Edward Darnell, 18, and Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, 26 — have been charged with homicide, robbery with a firearm, and conspiracy. The incident occurred near the Barnes & Noble bookstore, where the suspects reportedly attempted to rob McKay and her husband, resulting in a struggle. As the suspects fled in a white Toyota Camry, McKay was struck by the vehicle and fatally injured.

Local residents were alarmed as police captured the suspects, who were ultimately apprehended after a brief pursuit. Desley Simpson, Auckland’s Deputy Mayor, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed their condolences to McKay’s family, calling the couple “great people” and honoring Patricia McKay as a cherished individual.

The tragic incident has left the community and international visitors in disbelief, mourning the loss of a life taken far too soon.
