Less than 24 hours after posing as a customer to steal a gold chain from a showroom in Mira Road, the thief was arrested by a team from the Crime Branch Unit (Zone I) of the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police. The accused, identified as Ansh Sahil Raaj (21), was apprehended at the Udhna railway station in Surat after being tracked to an Ahmedabad-bound train. However, his accomplice remains at large.
According to the police, Ansh and his accomplice entered Shubh Laxmi Jewelers in Mira Road (East) around 5:15 pm on Wednesday, 12th March. Pretending to be a customer, Ansh selected a gold chain worth over Rs 80,000 and told the salesperson that he needed to show it to his brother-in-law, who was waiting outside. Before the salesperson could react, Ansh quickly ran out and both fled on a motorcycle.
An offence under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (for cheating and joint criminal liability) was filed at the Mira Road Police Station against the duo. Thanks to footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the crime scene and further electronic surveillance, the police were able to track the accused’s movements.
The investigation revealed that Ansh was traveling to Gujarat by train, and the police immediately alerted their railway counterparts in Surat. Ansh was arrested on Thursday, 13th March, when the train arrived at Udhna railway station.
