Teenager Sentenced to Life for Murder of Harleigh Hepworth

A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 17-year-old Harleigh Hepworth in a mobile phone robbery gone wrong in Wolverhampton. Harleigh, who had arranged to meet the offenders in March, was fatally stabbed in the chest during the robbery.

The teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, was convicted of murder, robbery, and possession of a bladed article. He was given a minimum sentence of 18 years. Co-defendant Jovarn Esterine, 18, was sentenced to six years and 43 days for manslaughter.

Harleigh’s family described him as a vibrant and caring individual whose life was cut short by senseless violence. “We will miss him massively, but we will always remember his cheekiness, his infectious smile, and the fun times we had together,” his family said.

The tragic incident occurred in West Park, Wolverhampton, where Harleigh and a friend met the two offenders, who claimed they needed phones for data use. After using the phones, the offenders asked for Harleigh’s PIN. When Harleigh asked for his phone back, one of the teens stabbed him in the chest, fatally injuring him.

Despite attempts from passers-by to administer first aid, Harleigh died at the scene. His family emphasized that Harleigh had plans for his future, which were tragically interrupted.

Detective Inspector Ade George commented on the case, saying it highlighted the offenders’ “callous nature” and the premeditated actions leading to the crime. Both offenders were also sentenced for robbery and possession of a bladed article.
