Teenager Arrested in Connection with Jackson Auto Theft and Carjacking Spree

Jackson, MS — A 17-year-old is in custody, and more arrests are anticipated after a series of auto thefts, carjackings, and burglaries committed by a group of juveniles in Jackson.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade confirmed the arrest of Azarion Hatcher, who faces multiple charges, including auto theft, felony fleeing from law enforcement, carjacking, attempted murder, and home invasion, the latter related to crimes in Yazoo City. The string of crimes spanned from the southern to northern parts of Jackson, alarming residents and raising safety concerns.

One particularly dramatic incident occurred when an off-duty Hinds County sheriff’s deputy’s car was targeted for theft at a gas station on Medgar Evers Blvd. During the attempted theft, gunfire was exchanged, leaving one individual injured.

Hatcher was apprehended without incident after a police pursuit. “He’s not your average 17-year-old,” said Wade, acknowledging the risks involved in the pursuit but emphasizing the necessity of apprehending individuals involved in violent crime.

While Hatcher is in custody, police have issued warrants for four other juveniles believed to have participated in the crime spree: a 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds, and a 16-year-old. Authorities have not yet released their names.

Chief Wade commended the Jackson Police Department’s patrol division and detectives for their efforts in bringing Hatcher into custody and preventing further harm to the community.
