In an ongoing child abuse investigation at Newman International Academy in Arlington, Texas, two teachers and the principal have been arrested. The arrests stem from allegations of inappropriate behavior and child grooming, and investigations suggest that there may be more victims.
Ruel Barbee, a teacher’s aide at the charter school, was arrested on February 6 after being charged with an improper relationship with a student. Gabrielle Little, a 22-year-old assistant coach for the girls’ basketball team, was charged with child grooming and later turned herself in to the authorities. Both teachers were fired following a week-long review of evidence, including interviews with students and staff.
Authorities said that two seventh-grade girls came forward with their allegations in early February. Based on their statements and physical evidence, investigators quickly issued warrants for Barbee’s arrest. Little was taken into custody a few days later. The charges stemmed from two separate incidents involving two different students and educators at the school.
Principal Richard Adams was arrested on February 8 and charged with failing to report the abuse, tampering with evidence, and tampering with a witness. Adams is accused of attempting to cover up the allegations made against Barbee and Little, directing the destruction of crucial evidence in the process. He resigned from his position while under investigation, and the school placed him and other involved staff members on administrative leave.
In addition to the charges against Barbee, Little, and Adams, the investigation continues as police believe there are additional victims connected to Barbee and Adams. Investigators have collected numerous phones as part of the probe, and police chief Matthew Antkowiak hinted that more charges could follow.
Barbee, also a local youth pastor, is under further scrutiny as three churches connected to him are being examined. While Antkowiak did not disclose details of other potential victims, he did state that the investigation is extending beyond Texas, with federal and state agencies involved.
Barbee and Little were released from jail after posting bail, while Adams remains in custody with a $50,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with further information or potential victims to come forward.
