Suroj Bk has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and sexual assault, but controversy has arisen over a character reference submitted on his behalf. A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice after allegedly providing a fake reference to support the sex offender. This woman is not connected to the original case.
Bk, 27, was found guilty after entering his victim’s bedroom and sexually assaulting her while she slept. During sentencing, several character references were presented, but concerns were raised about one claiming to be from a deceased senior religious leader.
The issue was brought to the attention of Judge Paul Thomas KC at Swansea Crown Court. While the judge stated the reference did not influence the sentencing, he ordered police to investigate. Dyfed-Powys Police have since arrested a 32-year-old woman in connection with the reference. She has been released under investigation as inquiries continue.
The sexual assault occurred in Ceredigion last year, with Bk entering the victim’s home at night, climbing into bed beside her boyfriend, and inappropriately touching her. The victim stated that the assault had “damaged her life in every conceivable way,” causing her to leave the area and suffer from graphic nightmares.
Bk, from Llangrannog, Ceredigion, is now a registered sex offender for life and is subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with his victim. Judge Thomas highlighted that Bk’s excessive drinking that night was evident, and his defense—which suggested the victim was fantasizing—was among the most implausible he had encountered. The judge expressed concern over the victim’s suffering and the community’s response to her allegations.
