SUVARNABHUMI — A Chinese national, Su Kai, suspected of orchestrating a high-value robbery in Hong Kong, has been apprehended by Thai immigration officials and extradited following a swift cross-border operation. The suspect allegedly stole 14 Hermès handbags and luxury jewelry worth nearly HK$3 million (US$382,170).
The arrest took place at Suvarnabhumi Airport after a Hong Kong police delegation, headed by Chief Inspector Lam Pak-kiu, coordinated with Thai authorities to take custody of Su Kai. He was deported on Cathay Pacific flight CX654 at 3:00 p.m. on June 19.
Recovered evidence included luxury goods estimated at HK$2 million in Hermès handbags and HK$1 million in Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry, along with cash in multiple currencies. The stolen items were found in the suspect’s luggage at the airport.
Police Major General Cherngron Rimpadee of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau 2 stated that Su Kai’s entry was blocked after authorities received intelligence from Hong Kong. The suspect had arrived in Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG629, triggering an immediate manhunt.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Kamonthip Khemnark led the successful operation that detained Su Kai within hours of his landing. More than 20 pieces of evidence were collected on-site, and Su Kai was denied entry into Thailand before being handed over to Hong Kong authorities.
The theft took place in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district. The suspect, described as heavyset and masked, initially feigned interest in buying a white Hermès bag. He later returned, rendered a 49-year-old shop assistant unconscious using a towel, tied her up, and escaped with the valuables.
The victim managed to free herself and alert authorities, leading to an investigation that traced the suspect to Thailand. Hong Kong police confirmed the total loss at HK$2.96 million.
This incident follows a previous luxury theft in Hong Kong in November 2024, where thieves stole 66 Hermès bags worth HK$10 million from a resale store.
Major General Cherngron highlighted the success of the operation as an example of effective international collaboration. Since January 2025, Thailand’s Immigration Bureau 2 has denied entry to over 10,000 high-risk individuals.
