LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Three individuals have been sentenced in connection with the kidnapping of a Las Vegas boy and demanding a ransom for his safe return.
Stephen Smith, Christian Scarlett, and Savannah Schmitt were sentenced in Clark County District Court on February 4. Scarlett and Smith were each ordered to serve a prison sentence of three to ten years. Schmitt, who played a lesser role in the crime, received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation for up to five years.
The trio was arrested last year after they allegedly abducted a child from a group of children at a convenience store located at Russell Road and Grand Canyon Drive. According to court documents, the child’s parents received a call from a man and woman demanding $4,000 for the child’s safe return. The kidnappers claimed the child and his friends had stolen a $4,000 e-bike from them.
Authorities were able to trace the phone number to Schmitt, and later located the three suspects and the child at an apartment. The suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
Smith, Scarlett, and Schmitt pleaded guilty to charges including robbery with a deadly weapon and second-degree kidnapping.
