Spencer Moen Sentenced to Life for Murder of Wife Sonja Moen

WEST FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Spencer Moen, 33, of West Fargo, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday for the murder of his wife, Sonja Moen, in August 2023.

During the court proceedings, Sonja Moen’s family shared poignant testimonies, recalling her vibrant personality and the void her death has left in their lives. Her mother, Kristin Scofield, tearfully expressed, “We are lost in the never, we will never hear her voice, her laughter, or her unique sneeze. We’ll never receive another funny story or an ‘I love you’ or a hug. We make the best of everyday, but there will always be a piece missing.”

Sonja’s close family, including her mother, sister, brother, and best friend, each delivered emotional impact statements. They all concluded that Spencer Moen should spend the rest of his life in prison, without the chance of parole.

Elise Smith, Sonja’s sister, shared a heartbreaking sentiment: “How was I to know that the photo I love so much, the one of the two of us at the Beyoncé concert, would end up being the photo that we photoshopped for her obituary?”

After hearing the victim’s testimony and the arguments from both the prosecution and defense, Spencer Moen addressed the court, apologizing to Sonja’s family. He expressed regret, stating, “I want to apologize to Kris, the family. I feel the pain this has caused everyone, and I wish I could take it back.”

Moen’s defense team argued for a 25-year sentence and suggested lifting the no-contact order if the Moen children later wished to contact him. However, after reviewing the severity of the crime, Cass County District Court Judge Nicholas Chase handed down the life sentence without the possibility of parole, stating, “The harm you’ve caused is off the charts.”

Spencer Moen will now serve his sentence for the murder of his wife, Sonja, as her family continues to mourn their tragic loss.
