South African Police Officer Raesetja Kutumela Faces Murder and Fraud Charges

The case against Raesetja Rachel Shokane Kutumela, a police officer accused of fraudulently benefitting from funeral, life, and accidental insurance policies, was postponed by the Polokwane District Court. Kutumela, who appeared briefly in court on Friday, faces serious charges including murder, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.

Kutumela, 43, is suspected of starting her killing spree in 2019. Police investigations have revealed that she allegedly used her position to exploit vulnerable individuals, taking out life and funeral insurance policies on their behalf and making herself the beneficiary. Some of her victims were from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those who were disabled or mentally challenged.

The court has denied Kutumela bail, with the state arguing that the charges of murder are premeditated. The state has invoked Schedule 6 of the Bail Act, which applies in cases where the accused is considered a danger to society. The case has been postponed to October 18, when her bail application will be heard.

Kutumela, a sergeant with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, was arrested earlier this week following an extensive investigation led by Captain Keshi Mabunda, who is known for capturing convicted killer Rosemary Ndlovu. Kutumela is believed to be linked to six insurance-related murders, with evidence suggesting she fraudulently pocketed over R10 million.

The arrest of a police officer involved in such crimes has sparked outrage. South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola condemned Kutumela’s actions, calling them a “disgrace.” He emphasized the betrayal of trust by a police officer who is sworn to protect the public, saying, “She abused her position of authority to exploit those who trusted her. This must serve as a stark reminder that no one is above the law.”

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full extent of Kutumela’s alleged crimes.
