On Wednesday, Sonali Biswas, a 44-year-old woman, was arrested by the police just a day after she claimed that two masked men had assaulted her and stolen Rs 14 lakh worth of gold from her home. The police discovered that she had fabricated the entire story to cover up her theft of gold meant for her stepson Debajyoti Biswas’s wedding.
According to the police, Sonali had been secretly siphoning off the gold jewelry stored in her house over several weeks. She was assisted in this crime by her brother-in-law, Raja Nag, an employee at a gold loan firm. Both were arrested and remanded in police custody.
Joint CP (Crime & Railways) Rupesh Kumar revealed that Sonali admitted to stealing the gold over the past few months. Sonali, who married railway official Piklu Biswas (58) after his first wife passed away, had cold feet about her stepson’s upcoming marriage. She needed money for her family’s real estate project in Bansdroni, which was facing issues with a promoter demanding a large sum.
To resolve the financial crisis, Sonali decided to steal the wedding gold. She enlisted Raja’s help to deposit 80 grams of gold to secure gold loans, while the rest was sold at a jewelry shop. Police are still working to recover the remaining stolen gold.
The robbery story unraveled after police found no CCTV footage of robbers entering or exiting the area. Upon questioning, Sonali confessed to staging the crime scene and manufacturing the injury on her forehead. The police now suspect other possible accomplices and are further investigating how Sonali orchestrated the fake robbery.
In her complaint, Sonali had claimed that she returned home around 7 pm to find two masked men, who she said were delivery agents, had entered her home. According to her, they pushed her to the ground, but now it’s clear that the entire scenario was fabricated.
