In a significant drug bust in Porterville, six people were arrested for running a meth lab and committing identity theft. The investigation began when Porterville Police Officers responded to a criminal threats investigation involving Matthew Ward, 40, at his trailer home on West Montgomery Avenue. Upon arrival, Ward and 42-year-old Robert Atchison were found at the scene.
A search of Ward’s trailer, authorized by the court due to his Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) status, revealed not only drugs but also equipment used for manufacturing methamphetamine. Police also uncovered business payroll forms, tax documents, and potential fraud victims in the area.
Both Ward and Atchison were arrested and charged with operating a drug house, possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing a controlled substance, and identity theft. Ward is being held on $50,000 bail, while Atchison is facing a $120,000 bail.
Following the arrests, detectives with Porterville PD’s Narcotics Investigations Unit, with assistance from the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) taskforce, executed a search warrant at another location tied to the meth lab. During the search, four additional suspects were arrested: Darin Morgan, 43, Amanda Smith, 35, Rigoberto Miranda, 54, and Cody Douglas, 29.
Douglas attempted to flee but was apprehended with the help of a police drone and aircraft. He was found in possession of methamphetamine. During the search, authorities discovered meth pipes, syringes, fentanyl powder, and other drug-related equipment.
Morgan, Smith, and Miranda were arrested and are facing multiple charges, including possession of controlled substances, operating a drug house, and drug paraphernalia possession. Douglas faces charges including resisting arrest, possession of meth, and operating a drug house.
“This operation was part of a larger effort to dismantle methamphetamine production and distribution in the area,” said Porterville PD officials. The investigation continues, with further actions anticipated.
