Police have arrested Simon Mwalubulo, a 28-year-old man from Manungu Compound in Monze, Southern Province, on charges of identity fraud and impersonation of Local Government Minister Gary Nkombo.

The arrest took place yesterday, and Mwalubulo is currently being held at Lusaka Central Police as investigations continue, according to Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.

Minister Gary Nkombo reported that unknown individuals had created a Facebook page using his name, “Garry Nkombo,” to solicit money from unsuspecting people. The fraudulent activity included false promises of government jobs and access to Constituency Development Funds, supposedly for empowerment purposes.

Hamoonga revealed that the scams occurred on various dates from January to October 2024 and were primarily carried out through social media platforms. Authorities have seized three cell phones and a SIM card believed to have been used to contact victims and collect money.

The police have urged the public to be cautious and verify the authenticity of job offers or financial solicitations before making any payments or commitments.
