Sharong Smith Indicted for Posing as Attorney in Chatham County

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Sharong Smith, also known by the name Nicole Johnston, has pleaded not guilty after being indicted on charges related to posing as an attorney in Chatham County.

In June 2024, Smith was indicted on serious charges, including identity fraud, forgery, theft by deception, and the unauthorized practice of law. This indictment followed a report by the WTOC Investigates team, which uncovered the allegations against Smith.

Smith was initially scheduled to enter a plea in October 2024; however, the arraignment was delayed after the judge previously assigned to the case recused herself. This development raised questions about whether anyone in Chatham County could take on the case, considering the courthouse is where Smith allegedly practiced law unlawfully.

In response, a spokesperson from the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office clarified that no prosecutors involved in the case have any professional ties to Smith. Smith is expected to appear in court again on May 9, 2024.
