Sarasota, Fla. (WWSB) – A 19-year-old woman, Sha’Miya Williams, has been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with a 2022 shooting incident in Sarasota that led to the death of a 17-year-old victim.
On February 6, 2022, Sarasota Police officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots fired in the area of Palmadelia Avenue. Upon arrival, they found that three juvenile victims had been injured. The victims included a 17-year-old male who later died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, a 16-year-old male who was shot in the hand, and a 9-year-old girl who was shot in the shoulder. Both the 16-year-old and 9-year-old were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
In addition to the injured victims, six more juveniles, aged 7 to 17, were in the vicinity but were not physically injured by the gunfire.
Sha’Miya Williams, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was arrested on February 7, 2022, in connection with the shooting. Williams was charged with homicide and attempted homicide. Thamar Liafortune, also 16 at the time, was arrested shortly after for his alleged involvement in the incident.
After a trial, Williams was found guilty last week of one count of manslaughter and eight counts of attempted manslaughter. The jury convicted Williams on the lesser charge of manslaughter, acknowledging that while she was involved in the incident, the shooting was not premeditated.
Williams’ sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
