According to the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigation Division, Smith provided false information to Dairyland Insurance Company regarding her vehicle policy. Commissioner Causey emphasized the financial impact of insurance fraud, stating, “Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet.”
The fraudulent incident occurred on September 29, but Smith was arrested on December 10. She made her first court appearance on December 11 in Mecklenburg County District Court, where she was granted a $50,000 unsecured bond.
Commissioner Causey further explained, “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud.”
