In a special drive against illegal lottery sales, the rural police on Friday arrested seven individuals in Pollachi and Perur sub-divisions. During the operation, authorities seized a total of 847 banned lottery tickets from the arrested suspects.
In one of the incidents, KG Chavadi police arrested C Vijayakumar, a 52-year-old resident of Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris district, at the Walayar check post for possessing 89 banned lottery tickets.
Meanwhile, Madukkarai police apprehended C Veeramani, a 64-year-old daily wage laborer from Tiruchengode in Namakkal district, at the L&T bypass road bridge with 324 banned lottery tickets. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
In separate cases, Pollachi Taluk police arrested S Murugan, a 55-year-old daily wage laborer from Nilakottai near Dindigul, for possessing 85 banned lottery tickets at the Gopalapuram check post, while Vadakkipalayam police detained P Ranganathan, a 47-year-old farmer from Virugalpattipudur near Udumalpet, Tirupur district, with 15 banned lottery tickets.
The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts by rural police to curb the illegal lottery trade in the region.
