A senior assistant at the waqf office in Bareilly was caught accepting a bribe on Tuesday, following an operation by the vigilance establishment team. The accused, Mohammed Asif, had demanded a bribe of Rs1 lakh from a complainant in exchange for facilitating the transfer of a madrassa, Manzooriya Akhtarul Ulum, from Razpura Bhedi to Basudharan Jagir.
According to officials from the vigilance department, after multiple requests, Asif agreed to accept an initial payment of Rs18,000 as the first instalment of the bribe. The complainant then filed a formal written complaint, which prompted the vigilance team to take action.
The team confirmed the allegations and apprehended Asif at the Minority Welfare Office, located at Development Bhawan, Bareilly, on Tuesday, while he was receiving the Rs18,000 in cash. An FIR has been lodged against Asif, and further legal proceedings are underway.
The vigilance department has continued its crackdown on corruption, encouraging the public to report any similar incidents. “Anyone facing demands for bribes from public servants can contact the anti-bribery helpline at ,” stated a senior vigilance officer.
