A Rockland teenager has been arrested and charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing $40,000 from a vehicle.
Suspect Identified as Zachary Gilbert
Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Zachary Gilbert, who is also facing a violation of conditions of release charge. At the time of his arrest on March 7, Gilbert was already out on five sets of conditions of release from prior offenses.
Investigation & Additional Suspects
The theft was reported on February 19, and authorities believe the victim was targeted due to the large amount of unsecured cash inside the vehicle. The investigation involved:
Witness interviews
Search warrants at homes and hotels in Thomaston, Warren, and Owls Head
Along with Gilbert, one juvenile has also been charged with felony theft. Police say charges are pending against four more juvenile suspects, whose names remain undisclosed due to their ages.
Public Safety Reminder
Rockland Police urge residents to lock their vehicle doors and remove valuables when leaving their cars unattended. While this incident was likely a targeted crime, random car burglaries are common, with thieves often checking for unlocked doors.
