STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO – A Colorado man has been sentenced to jail and probation for attempting to vote multiple times in the 2022 general election in Routt County.
Robert Anzulewicz, 41, from Steamboat Springs, pleaded guilty to mail-in ballot election fraud, a misdemeanor, on June 4. He was sentenced by Routt County Judge Erin Wilson to 20 days in jail and two years of probation.
According to 14th Judicial District Attorney Matt Karzen, Anzulewicz made three attempts to vote in the 2022 election: first by submitting his own mail-in ballot, then by forging another person’s mail-in ballot, and finally by trying to vote in person.
It remains unclear why Anzulewicz tried to cast multiple ballots, but Karzen emphasized that his office did not investigate Anzulewicz’s voting preferences to avoid any appearance of political bias in the prosecution.
The Routt County Clerk and Recorder’s Office flagged the fraudulent voting attempts and successfully blocked Anzulewicz’s additional ballots, county officials confirmed.
“This offense is rare, but the Clerk & Recorder’s Office processes allowed us to identify and stop it immediately,” a county news release stated.
The 2022 election included several important races, such as for U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, and state and local positions including governor, county commissioner, and sheriff. Although there were no presidential candidates on the ballot, the stakes were high.
Anzulewicz, who is unaffiliated with any political party, was registered with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office.
“We want the citizens of Routt County to know that we work hard to prevent election fraud, and we have measures in place to catch such attempts,” said Routt County Clerk and Recorder Jenny Thomas in a statement.
