Raymond Johnson Arrested in Deadly Confrontation Over Stolen Van in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. — Raymond Johnson, a 32-year-old man from Downey, will face charges of murder and attempted murder in connection to a deadly confrontation that began over the theft of a delivery van in Berkeley.

The incident unfolded on January 18, when the owner of a delivery van, who had previously experienced thefts, reported his vehicle had been stolen while he was in Oakland. Using a tracker he had placed on the van, the owner pinpointed its location on the 1300 block of Russell Street in Berkeley. Upon arriving at the scene, the van owner saw a man and a woman removing packages from the van.

The confrontation between the van owner and the man, identified as Raymond Johnson, escalated into a fight. Police arrived shortly afterward and discovered two men with stab wounds at the intersection of Russell and Acton streets. A woman, later identified as the third person involved in the incident, was found a block and a half away on Burnett Street. She later died from her injuries, while the two men were treated for their stab wounds at the hospital.

Johnson has been arrested and will face charges related to the fatal confrontation. Berkeley police have not released the identities of the other two individuals involved, nor have they provided specific details about Johnson’s actions during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to work on determining the full circumstances surrounding the altercation.

Police have thanked the public for their patience as the investigation remains active.
