The Rachakonda Police have successfully arrested an interstate gang involved in several attention diversion thefts targeting elderly and middle-aged women. The arrests were made on Wednesday, and stolen materials worth Rs 17 lakh were recovered from the suspects.
The arrested individuals are Gujarathi Kishan, Ram Lal, Shyam Lal, Koli, and a 14-year-old boy, all residents of Hyderabad. According to the police, the gang’s method involved a young boy approaching victims in public places under the pretense of asking for directions or help.
The boy would display a bundle of cash, with fake notes sandwiched between real currency notes, offering to exchange money for the victim’s jewelry. As the victim became distracted, other gang members would pressure her into handing over her valuables. By the time the victim realized the scam, the gang would quickly escape from the scene.
Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu stated that the gang was also found in possession of alprazolam, a medication commonly used for anxiety. The gang had been involved in similar thefts in various areas, including Bhongir town, Hussainialam, Dundigal, Jeedimetla, SR Nagar, and Afzalgunj.
The authorities continue to investigate the suspects’ involvement in other potential crimes.
