Punson Figueroa Sentenced for $9M Amtrak Health Care Fraud

A New York woman has been sentenced to federal prison after admitting her role as the mastermind behind a $9 million health care fraud scheme involving Amtrak. Punson Figueroa, also known as “Susie,” aged 58 and residing in Long Island City, Queens, received a 34-month prison sentence on Tuesday, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.

Figueroa, an acupuncturist, pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit health care fraud. She was one of four individuals charged in this scheme, which resulted in Amtrak being defrauded of over $9 million in false health insurance claims. Federal investigators uncovered the operation through an undercover investigation that began in 2021.
