PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — A tragic incident occurred this week when a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself in Port St. Lucie. The incident took place around 7 p.m. at a home located in the 5700 block of Northwest Zenith Drive.
The child’s mother, Natalie Cruz, 24, and her fiancé, Quintenn Wesley, 25, were arrested on Friday and are facing charges related to the death of their son.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the child lying on a bed in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head. The boy was rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
According to police, the child was on the bed with his mother when she heard a gunshot. She looked to find her son with a fatal wound and a handgun next to him. The firearm, a 9 mm handgun, was identified as belonging to Wesley, who reportedly kept two unsecured handguns in the master bedroom.
At the time of the shooting, five adults and two children were in the home. Cruz and the 2-year-old were in the master bedroom, while Wesley, his sister, father, and grandmother were in other rooms with an infant.
Wesley’s two handguns were seized as evidence along with the spent shell casing and the projectile. The investigation continues, and both Cruz and Wesley remain in custody.
