Police Brutality Allegations Emerge in Travel Scam Case

In a shocking development, allegations of police brutality have emerged against Angsuman Paul, a fraudster in custody for his involvement in a travel package scam in Guwahati.

Paul was brought before Special Judicial Magistrate P. Bordoloi following two days of police detention related to case no. 276/2024. During the proceedings, medical reports indicated that he sustained swelling on the right side of his face and neck. The magistrate noted that Paul reported these injuries and that visible marks were observed.

In response to a petition filed by Arnab Paul, alleging torture by police, the court ordered the Superintendent of Central Jail, Guwahati, to conduct a medical examination of Angsuman Paul and submit a report within four days. The court emphasized the need for proper medical care for the accused.

The travel package scam, which came to light on October 23, involved fraudsters from outside Assam exploiting locals. Operating under the name “Discovery,” the agency was located near the Nepali Mandir in the Paltan Bazar area. Victims reported being attracted by enticing offers for flight tickets and travel packages, only to find themselves abandoned at their destinations without the promised services.

Travelers, assured of drivers waiting to pick them up and pre-booked accommodations, instead faced vulnerability upon arrival, as the agency severed ties shortly after their flights. The lack of promised transportation and guided tours led to significant financial losses for many unsuspecting customers.
