Police Arrest Two Men in AI-Aided Scam Targeting Beauty Queen

Two men have been arrested for their involvement in a call scam operation based in Poipet, which deceived numerous victims, including Thai-British beauty queen Charlotte Austin, who lost 4 million baht.

Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, confirmed that 31-year-old Ramil Pantawong was apprehended in Wang Nam Yen, Sa Kaeo, and 28-year-old Thanawut Kanyaphan was detained in Bang Lamung, Chon Buri, following their capture on Sunday.

The suspects allegedly employed artificial intelligence technology to impersonate Thai police officers while operating out of a call scam center located on the 13th floor of an 18-story building in Poipet. This group of roughly 50 members had previously deceived 163 victims.

The criminals used AI to convincingly pose as law enforcement, claiming they were investigating money laundering and drug trafficking activities. They instructed victims to transfer funds to their accounts for “investigation purposes.” Among the scam’s victims was Charlotte Austin, who lost a staggering 4 million baht to the fraudulent operation.

Authorities have successfully dismantled a portion of this widespread scam, with further investigations underway.
