Police Arrest Tumwine David for Possessing Firearms at Kisenyi Bus Terminal

In Kampala, the police apprehended a suspect in possession of firearms and other dangerous items at the Kisenyi Bus Terminal. The individual, identified as Tumwine David, alias Busoni, is a 40-year-old from Mubuteraniro Village in Mubende District.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, Tumwine was arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The recovered items included a sub-machine gun (SMG), live rounds of ammunition, magazines, pangas, a bottle of petrol, and ropes.

The suspect was intercepted on November 4, 2024, around 9:00 AM during a security check at the Kisenyi Bus Terminal. Upon inspecting his bags, the dangerous items were found. The terminal’s security team promptly informed the police, and Tumwine is currently in custody at Old Kampala Police Station.

Police are investigating his intentions and possible connections to organized crime or terrorism. This incident underscores the significance of heightened vigilance in public spaces to ensure safety and prevent potential threats.

Gun violence remains a major concern in Uganda, with illegal firearms contributing to crime and insecurity. The Small Arms Survey estimates that between 400,000 and 500,000 illegal firearms are in civilian hands. The Uganda Police Force reported 1,185 firearm-related crimes in 2022, signaling a growing challenge for law enforcement in tackling gun violence. Efforts such as disarmament campaigns in regions like Karamoja aim to reduce the proliferation of illegal arms. However, this issue remains a significant hurdle for public safety.

Further updates on the investigation will be provided as they become available.
