A man impersonating an officer from the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has been arrested for falsely claiming to have worked in the state government for two decades, deceiving individuals for personal benefits, police stated on Sunday.
The arrested individual, Nitesh Chaudhary (resident of Surat), caught the attention of the authorities after he repeatedly contacted Navsari Deputy Collector Janam Thakor between October 2024 and January 2025.
Presenting himself as a prominent official from the CMO, Chaudhary fabricated a story about his involvement in a land-grabbing case and claimed that a settlement had been reached for Rs 40 lakh. His persistent approach and unusual requests raised suspicions, prompting the Deputy Collector to investigate further. Thakor found no record of Chaudhary in the CMO, which led to the fraudster’s exposure.
Chaudhary had convinced several people by claiming he organized official tours for the Chief Minister and could facilitate meetings with high-ranking officials. He also pretended to hold a Master’s degree in Mass Communication and Journalism, fabricating his career trajectory.
Chaudhary now faces legal charges under Section 204 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), and the police continue to investigate how many other individuals he deceived using his fabricated identity.
