Nigerian Make-Up Artist Jailed for Spraying Naira at Wedding Celebration

Abdullahi Musa Huseini, a popular Nigerian make-up artist known as “Amuscap” on social media, has been sentenced to six months in jail for abusing the national currency, the naira. Huseini, who was found guilty of flinging banknotes during his wedding celebration last December, was sentenced by a high court in Kano shortly after pleading guilty to the charge.

The act of spraying banknotes, or “flinging” money, is a common tradition at weddings and other celebrations in Nigeria, symbolizing wealth and joy. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been cracking down on such practices, viewing them as disrespectful to the naira, which is a key national symbol.

Amuscap’s conviction marks the latest in a series of similar cases. Under the 2007 Central Bank of Nigeria Act, it is illegal to spray or dance on the naira. Offenders can face a minimum sentence of six months in prison or a fine of 50,000 naira (approximately $32). The EFCC reported that during his wedding, Huseini “tampered” with 100,000 naira by spraying the notes into the air.

The case has sparked controversy, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the harsh punishment. Some have pointed to the apparent double standard in the country, where alleged corruption by government officials often goes unpunished, yet an individual is jailed for “spraying his own money.”

This isn’t the first case of such a conviction. Last year, popular Nigerian social media personality Bobrisky and actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin also served prison sentences for similar offenses. The cases have ignited debates about the balance between preserving national symbols and addressing more significant economic crimes.
