Two individuals involved in a complex shoplifting operation that included the use of devices to block security alarms have pleaded guilty and are set to be deported, according to Surrey RCMP. The arrests of Nicoleta Rusu, 51, and Emil Marian Stan, 39, were announced earlier this year in connection with a series of high-value retail thefts.
The pair was accused of stealing $53,000 worth of luxury items, including high-end fragrances and athletic apparel, from retail stores in Surrey, Langley, and Abbotsford over a span of six months.
On Tuesday, Surrey RCMP confirmed that the suspects had pleaded guilty to several charges. Stan was convicted of seven counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of theft over $5,000, and one count of possessing stolen property exceeding $5,000. Meanwhile, Rusu was convicted of two counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of theft over $5,000, and one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
Both individuals will face deportation after completing their sentences, although Surrey RCMP did not specify their countries of origin. The RCMP stated that they could not disclose further details on the shoplifters’ nationality.
As for the length of their prison sentences, Mounties mentioned that the final determination was still pending in court. However, they stressed that Rusu and Stan would face consequences for their actions.
“This case highlights the consequences of criminal activity, with the loss of freedom and the opportunity to live in Canada,” said Staff Sgt. Nigel Pronger, commander of the North Community Response Unit of Surrey RCMP. “We are committed to working with retail partners and law enforcement across the province to ensure a safe shopping environment for both employees and customers.”
Surrey RCMP continues to focus on reducing retail theft as part of their ongoing crime prevention strategy.
