Newark Family Mourns the Loss of 9-Year-Old Yasin Morrison After Fatal Shooting
The family of 9-year-old Yasin Morrison is grieving his tragic death after he was shot in Newark over the weekend. Yasin, who had autism and was non-verbal, was killed on Friday evening in a heartbreaking incident outside his grandparents’ home.
While Yasin, his 3-year-old sister, and another man were getting out of a car to visit their grandmother, a gunman opened fire. As the family prepared for a routine weekend together, Yasin was shot and later died from his injuries.
Authorities have arrested 36-year-old Jesse J. Dunbar II, charging him with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other crimes related to the shooting. Dunbar is accused of stalking and shooting at a 36-year-old man, whom he allegedly targeted on Osborne Terrace. However, the stray bullet tragically struck Yasin instead.
“I’m glad they caught the person, but it won’t bring Yasin back,” said Latasia Morrison, Yasin’s aunt.
The loss has been devastating for the family, but they are finding strength through the support of the community. “The police have been so supportive, and they didn’t stop until they caught the person responsible,” Yasin’s grandmother, Tisha Bolden, said.
The family now faces the painful task of planning Yasin’s funeral while receiving emotional and financial support from their community, including donations via a GoFundMe page.
Despite being non-verbal, Yasin’s grandmother fondly remembers the lessons he taught her. “He taught me patience, unconditional love, and humility,” Bolden said. “I’ll miss him every day, especially his little face and his hugs.”
As they say their goodbyes, the family hopes for justice and comfort as they honor Yasin’s memory.
