The FBI has confirmed that 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a Texas resident, is the suspect responsible for the devastating New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans. The attack, which is currently being investigated as an “act of terrorism,” resulted in at least 10 fatalities and over 35 injuries.
Details of the Attack
Around 3:15 a.m. local time, Jabbar drove a Ford pick-up truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in the French Quarter, one of New Orleans’ most popular areas. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the vehicle plowed through the packed streets, striking numerous individuals.
After crashing into the crowd, Jabbar exited the truck and engaged in a firefight with law enforcement officers before being fatally shot by police at the scene.
FBI Investigation
The FBI’s investigation revealed that Jabbar’s truck contained an ISIS flag, along with weapons and an improvised explosive device (IED). Authorities also discovered additional potential IEDs within the French Quarter area. The FBI is working with bomb technicians and local law enforcement to assess the devices’ safety.
In addition, the FBI is investigating Jabbar’s possible connections to ISIS and other terrorist groups. The pick-up truck used in the attack appears to have been rented, and the FBI is working to uncover how Jabbar obtained it.
Reactions from Leaders
President Joe Biden condemned the attack as “an act of pure evil” and expressed his support for the people of New Orleans. He vowed to provide federal resources to aid in the investigation and recovery efforts.
President-elect Donald Trump also addressed the attack, calling it a “tragic example of the dangers of terrorism” and advocating for stricter national security and immigration policies.
Impact and Response
In the aftermath of the attack, the French Quarter remains under heavy security, with bomb squads and forensic teams continuing their work to ensure public safety. A press conference later today will address security barriers and future measures aimed at preventing such attacks.
Journalist James Matthews described the injuries sustained by the victims as “horrific,” noting that the number of fatalities could increase as more details emerge.
Community in Mourning
The attack has left the people of New Orleans in deep shock, with many mourning the loss of life and voicing concerns over the safety of the city in light of the incident.
