New Iberia, LA – Michael “Dookie” Shockley Jr., 34, was arrested on charges of institutional vandalism, desecration of graves, and simple burglary, following the theft of military plaques from gravesites in Iberia Parish. These stolen items, many of which were located in local cemeteries, were allegedly defaced and cut into pieces before being melted down for scrap.
Shockley’s bond has not been set, and the investigation is ongoing. He is one of several individuals arrested for the theft of bronze markers from veterans’ graves, which were found with the names ground off. Six people were previously arrested in connection with the same case.
Authorities are also searching for Richard Paul Brower, 47, who remains at large. Brower is wanted in connection with the thefts and desecration of the graves. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact them at 337-369-3711 or to dial 911 immediately.
The theft and damage of military grave markers have left many in the community shocked, particularly as they were taken from the graves of fallen veterans.
