The Neral police have arrested 33-year-old Sumit Saini for allegedly defrauding multiple women of lakhs of rupees by promising to marry them. His arrest followed a complaint from a 35-year-old woman, leading the police to monitor Saini’s activities for several days prior to his apprehension.
Officials report that Saini is a habitual offender who deceived several women at once by creating fake profiles on various matrimonial sites and social media platforms. In July, he specifically targeted a Neral resident with a substantial income.
The complainant recounted that she connected with Saini through a matrimonial site last year. As their relationship developed, they communicated regularly. Eventually, Saini expressed his feelings and coerced her into sending intimate pictures. He then fabricated various excuses related to family or personal needs to solicit money from her. The woman was devastated to learn that Saini was already married and had misrepresented himself on the site with false details.
Promptly after realizing the deception, she approached the Neral police, where Police Inspector Shivaji Dhavle took swift action on her complaint. Investigating Officer Police Sub-Inspector Prachi Pange secured technical details leading to Saini’s arrest within two days of the complaint being filed.
“Following his arrest, our investigation revealed that Saini’s modus operandi involved deceiving and extorting money from women simultaneously. He targeted multiple victims, looting them of substantial amounts. He created distinct fake profiles for each victim, using altered pictures and varying information,” stated a police officer.
Saini is currently in police custody for two days as authorities work to gather more evidence against him.
