Natchitoches Man Arrested for Plywood Fraud Scheme

Authorities in Natchitoches Parish have arrested Shumichael L. Moore, 38, in connection with a fraudulent scheme where he reportedly sold plywood at reduced prices to homeowners, including some senior citizens, for home improvement projects. Moore’s scam included taking payments for materials he never delivered.

The investigation began on January 9 when a complaint was filed with the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office regarding a theft by fraud. The complainant reported that a man, later identified as Moore, stopped by their home while driving a maroon-colored Kia. During the visit, Moore, using the fake name “Mike Morrow,” told the complainant he worked for a local plywood plant and offered to sell plywood at a discount. The complainant paid $170 for two bundles of plywood, followed by another $320 for additional materials, but Moore never returned with the goods.

On January 22, a second victim reported Moore offering plywood at a discounted price in Oak Grove, near Natchitoches. This victim also handed over nearly $500, but received no materials. Moore was also allegedly involved in similar scams in Winn Parish, prompting authorities there to get involved.

Moore, a convicted felon on parole, had a history of fraud-related offenses, including home improvement scams and theft. Authorities confirmed that Moore was not employed by the plywood plant and the company did not sell to private individuals.

Following an investigation, Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Detectives secured arrest warrants for Moore on two counts of theft. On January 18, Moore was arrested at a Myrtle Drive address without incident. He was booked into LaSalle Corrections/Natchitoches Detention Center.

Detectives have reason to believe there may be additional victims in Natchitoches Parish and surrounding areas. They are urging anyone who believes they may have been defrauded by Moore to come forward.

In light of these events, authorities recommend residents conduct business only with trusted sources and verify credentials before making any purchases. They also advise comparing estimates from multiple providers, checking references, and using secure payment methods to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
