Two women, Nancy Mavrich, 20, and Kaleigh Fields, 23, were arrested after they were caught attempting to collect stolen iPhones in a scam targeting residents of the Tyler Park neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky.
In late January, Sonya Brown received a suspicious package containing two brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max models. The box had her name, along with an unknown phone number. Upon contacting Verizon, Brown learned that an account had been opened in her name for both phones. Fearing a scam, she contacted the police.
Brown’s security camera recorded footage of two women arriving at her doorstep, seemingly rehearsing their lines to pick up the package. When Brown didn’t answer, the women left but returned shortly after. Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) officers identified them as Mavrich and Fields. Both women were charged with identity theft.
Authorities in Kentucky and southern Indiana are warning residents about this new scam. According to Whitney Adkins from the Better Business Bureau, the scammers’ aim was likely to obtain high-end products without paying for them, selling the items under false pretenses while remaining anonymous.
Local law enforcement urges residents to be cautious with personal information online and to report any mysterious packages to the authorities immediately.
