A mother from Balch Springs, Texas, has been arrested following the death of her 19-year-old autistic daughter, Delilah Villegas, on Valentine’s Day. Crystal Canales, 41, reported that her daughter was having trouble breathing when she called 911 on February 14. However, when paramedics arrived at their home on Horseshoe Trail, they found Delilah already deceased.
Foul Odor and Evidence of Prolonged Neglect
According to Balch Springs police, Delilah’s body showed signs of severe neglect and malnutrition. She was found in the fetal position, suggesting that she had been lying in that same spot for an extended period. Paramedics determined she had been dead for several hours. Delilah, who had severe autism, was also found with multiple bruises, contusions, and bedsores on her body. Detectives discovered exposed bones, particularly on her right thigh, shoulder, hip, and other areas.
Mother’s Explanation and Investigation
When questioned, Canales told detectives that Delilah had eaten some Goldfish crackers earlier that day and had been breathing before paramedics arrived. However, Canales was unable to explain the severe malnutrition and the extensive wounds on her daughter’s body. She claimed to have treated the bedsores with Neosporin but admitted she had not sought medical care for Delilah, as the young woman would often become violent.
Police records indicated that Delilah’s last hospital visit occurred in 2021, and there were no medical calls to the house since May of that year. Detectives concluded that any reasonable person would have sought medical help for Delilah’s injuries.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Crystal Canales was arrested and charged with serious bodily injury to a disabled person under her care. She has been held in the Balch Springs jail and is expected to be transferred to the Dallas County jail. As the investigation continues, the community remains shocked by the tragic circumstances surrounding Delilah’s death.
This case underscores the need for vigilance in the care of vulnerable individuals, particularly those with severe disabilities, and the importance of seeking appropriate medical attention for those in need.
