The Cyber Crime Wing of the city police has arrested Mohammed Irfan Shaikh (25) from Anand district, Gujarat, for allegedly duping a Coimbatore-based woman of Rs64 lakh under the pretense of offering overseas job placements.
The complainant, the director of BiMars Education Limited, had come across a Facebook advertisement promoting affordable overseas job placements. The ad promised employment opportunities in countries like Ukraine, Croatia, Poland, and Serbia.
Tempted by the offer, she contacted Shaikh, who posed as an agent capable of facilitating low-cost international job placements. Over time, the victim transferred Rs64 lakh to accounts linked to the accused, only to later discover that the promised placements were fake.
Based on her complaint filed in R.S. Puram, the Cyber Crime Wing traced the accused to Gujarat. A special team was dispatched and successfully apprehended Mohammed Irfan Shaikh, who has since been remanded in judicial custody.
Authorities urge job seekers to verify the legitimacy of overseas placement offers and avoid deals that seem unusually low-cost or are promoted solely via social media platforms.
