The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department officials made a significant drug bust in Aizawl on Thursday night, seizing 9.584 kg (90,000 tablets) of methamphetamine. The authorities apprehended Jacob Thanga, a 34-year-old suspect from Bualte village near Rihkhawdar, Chin State, Myanmar. Thanga admitted during interrogation that he trafficked the methamphetamine from Myanmar for distribution outside Mizoram.
The officials also confiscated a car used to transport the illegal drugs. Thanga was charged under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and produced before the special court in Aizawl on Friday, where he was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Due to the abundant supply of methamphetamine, the price of each tablet has dropped significantly, from Rs 250-300 to Rs 50. Law enforcement sources indicated that most of the methamphetamine trafficked from Myanmar is intended for regions outside Mizoram, as there are relatively few users of the “speed pill” in the state.
