A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery that took place in Wilmington, Delaware, last September, according to Wilmington Police. Michael Smith, identified as the suspect, was charged following an extensive investigation.
The robbery occurred on September 23, 2024, at around 11:04 a.m. in the 2400 block of Washington Street. After receiving the robbery report, the case was assigned to Detective Douglas Rivell of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through diligent investigative work, Detective Rivell identified Smith as the prime suspect and obtained warrants for his arrest.
At the time of the investigation, Smith was already in custody at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on an unrelated matter. He has now been charged with several serious offenses, including first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony.
Following his arraignment in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas, Smith remains at the correctional institution, held on a $56,000 cash-only bail. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and Smith, like all suspects, is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
