Michael Justin Canfield Arrested for Golf Club Theft in Bedford

On Monday, February 17, 47-year-old Michael Justin Canfield of Fort Branch was arrested in connection with the theft of a set of golf clubs from a Bedford home. The theft had been reported back on December 17, 2024, when the victim claimed her boyfriend’s golf clubs were taken from an unlocked shed between December 16th and 17th.

The break in the case came when Detective Shelhart visited Ace Pawn Shop on December 17, following up on an unrelated investigation. While there, the pawn shop directed him to a set of 13 golf clubs that had been brought in the previous day. Upon checking the serial numbers, Detective Shelhart confirmed that the stolen clubs had matching serial numbers to the ones found at the pawn shop, except for one item, which was slightly different due to a phone-in mistake by the owner.

Ace Pawn Shop also provided a bill of sale that showed Canfield had sold the clubs for $200 on December 16 at 10:56 a.m. The stolen clubs were recovered and returned to the owner, but the red and black Callaway rangefinder, valued at $170, remains missing.

The case was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and an arrest warrant was issued for Canfield. Canfield now faces theft charges in connection with the incident.

As a reminder, those charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty through the judicial process. The system will evaluate all evidence presented to make a fair decision.
