TROY, OH — Steven Werling, a 54-year-old Miami County doctor, appeared in federal court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to a federal charge, according to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio. The exact charge Werling pleaded guilty to remains sealed, and the Department of Justice has not yet disclosed further details.
In April 2023, Werling was the subject of a days-long FBI investigation, which led to the FBI and Miami County Sheriff’s Office conducting a search at his home in Concord Township, near Troy. The investigation caused a two-day lockdown in the neighborhood and uncovered explosive components and devices inside his residence.
As previously reported, authorities found an unregistered silencer in Werling’s home, along with components to build more. This led to his arrest on federal weapons charges. Although Werling faced a dangerous ordinance charge in Miami County Court, the case was moved to federal court, and the Miami County charge was dismissed.
Werling was released on his own recognizance in April 2023, pending further legal proceedings. His guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, but details on his sentencing remain pending.
