Mercedes Benz Driver Sum Kah Fei Faces Court Over Accident Charges

PETALING JAYA: Sum Kah Fei, 34, the driver of a Mercedes Benz GLE450 SUV involved in a collision that resulted in a fire near the Wangsa Maju Toll Plaza on the SPE highway, appeared in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court on November 18.

According to Harian Metro, Sum pleaded not guilty to two charges following the incident. The first charge alleges that he drove recklessly, causing a crash with a motorcycle and seriously injuring the rider, Muhammad Nur Faiz Saini. Sum faces charges under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which could result in a prison sentence of up to five years, a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000, and a five-year ban on holding a driver’s license if convicted.

The second charge accuses Sum of failing to stop his vehicle after the accident, in violation of Section 52(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, read with Section 119(1)(a). This charge carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or up to six months in prison.

A bail of RM12,000 was initially proposed for both charges, but Sum’s lawyer requested a reduction due to his client’s business difficulties and family support responsibilities. The court agreed and set the bail at RM6,000 with one guarantor. The date for document submission was scheduled for February 24, 2025.
