MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A federal judge has granted Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, an East Memphis doctor, release on a $100,000 bond following his indictment on 23 federal charges.
The unsealed indictment, made public Friday, accuses Dr. Kumar of coercing at least four women to travel to Memphis to engage in illegal sex acts between September 2019 and June 2024.
Dr. Kumar owns and operates the Poplar Avenue Clinic – Women’s Health and Med Spa, located at 6584 Poplar Avenue. On April 16, 2024, the FBI raided the clinic in search of evidence related to the case.
As part of his bond conditions, prosecutors recommended that Dr. Kumar:
Close his clinic on Poplar Avenue
Allow patients access to medical records to change providers
Cease all medical practice, including prescribing medication or providing healthcare services
Surrender his passport and avoid contact with employees or victims
Restrict travel to West Tennessee
Charges Against Dr. Kumar:
4 counts of enticement and inducement to engage in illegal sex acts
5 counts of adulteration of single-use medical devices
3 counts of misbranding reprocessed medical devices
1 count of adulterating hysteroscopes cleared for reprocessing
10 counts of healthcare fraud
Dr. Kumar’s arraignment is set for March 12, and the investigation remains ongoing.
