Meerut police arrested Yamin alias Toocha, a cattle smuggler from Kayastha Baddha village, following a brief exchange of fire in which the accused sustained an injury to his left leg, officials reported on Monday.
During the operation, police seized an illegal pistol, cartridges, animal slaughtering tools, and syringes used to sedate animals from Yamin’s possession. The arrest came after the discovery of cow remains in Pachgaon Patti Sanwal village on June 14, which had prompted a case against unknown individuals.
On Sunday night, police tried to stop a group of suspicious persons in Ladpura village. The suspects opened fire on the police team, resulting in a retaliatory response where Yamin was injured.
In questioning, Yamin confessed that he and his accomplices sedated cows before slaughtering and selling the meat. He also admitted to slaughtering the cow whose remains were found earlier this month, the police officer stated.
Investigation continues as authorities work to identify more individuals involved in the illegal cattle smuggling and slaughter operation.
