Mechanicsville Man Arrested for Arson and Assault in Domestic Incident

Mechanicsville, MD – Robert Steven Lacey, 45, was arrested on January 15, 2025, after an alleged domestic dispute escalated into arson and physical assault. Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Jacqueline Street following reports of suspicious burning and a domestic altercation.

Upon arrival, deputies found the victim visibly distressed, with multiple injuries consistent with physical assault, including bruises on her face, throat, and red marks indicating strangulation. The victim claimed that during an argument, Lacey physically assaulted her, then burned a bag containing her personal belongings in a fire pit near the front door.

Lacey admitted to the physical altercation but described it as self-defense. He also acknowledged burning the bag, though he claimed it was an accident. However, deputies observed injuries to Lacey’s hands, indicating he may have struck something or someone during the incident.

Following an investigation, Lacey was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property, and second-degree malicious burning. The most serious charge, first-degree assault, is a felony carrying up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Lacey was denied bond during a bail hearing on January 16, 2025, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on February 13, 2025. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of seeking help for domestic violence situations, urging individuals in need to reach out to local resources
