Nancy Indoveria Kigunzu, better known as Mathe Wa Ngara, along with two other suspects, was arraigned in court on August 12, 2024, facing serious drug trafficking charges. The three individuals are accused of trafficking 189,300 grams of bhang, valued at Sh5.6 million.
Mathe Wa Ngara, along with co-accused David Ochieng Okoth and Christopher Odipo Ochieng, was arrested on August 9, 2024, at Georgina Apartments in Juja, Kiambu County, where they were found in possession of the drugs. The prosecution raised concerns over their release, citing that the suspects posed a flight risk and might interfere with witnesses in the case. Additionally, it was revealed that Mathe Wa Ngara has a history of committing similar offenses.
The court ordered a probation report before a decision on bail could be made, and the case was adjourned until August 19, 2024. Mathe Wa Ngara was previously arrested in August 2023 by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), with a large quantity of bhang and Sh13.4 million in cash seized from her residence.
In December 2023, she was granted bail of Sh1 million but was ordered to surrender her passport. On April 30, 2024, the court ruled that the Sh13.4 million, which was seized during the investigation, should be forfeited to the government. The money was found in sacks in her home, and she failed to explain its source, prompting the court to declare it as proceeds of crime.
Justice Esther Maina ruled, stating that the money would be handed over to the Central Bank of Kenya for forfeiture to the government, as it was deemed linked to illegal activities.
