The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has announced additional charges in the tragic death of an 8-year-old child, with the child’s stepmother, Mary Marie Everson, now facing second-degree murder charges.

This development follows the fatal incident on Saturday, February 8, when emergency responders were called to a residence in the 100 block of Circle View Street in Rocky Mount. Upon arrival, the child was pronounced dead.

Initially, Mary Everson had been charged with one felony count of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injuries. Following further investigation, the second-degree murder charge was added.

Mary Everson is currently being held without bond while awaiting further court proceedings.

Along with her, the child’s father, Michael Eugene Everson, was also arrested. He faces a felony charge of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injuries.

The child’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. As of now, it is unclear whether additional charges will be filed against Michael Everson.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this tragic case, and further updates will be provided as new details emerge.
